So what is air
conditioning all about?
It's about comfort, cool
air in summer, warm air in winter - clean air all year round.
Good air conditioning
means controlled temperature, relative humidity and cleanliness
along with good ventilation and air distribution.
How to select the right
system for you is complicated with many factors to consider.
The benefits
of air conditioning
- Cooling - no hot summer
days and sleepiness nights
- Humidity Control -
reduced humidity to a comfortable level
- Filtration - air is
filtered in the air conditioned areas several times each hour,
removing dust and pollen.
- Air Circulation -
clean air conditioned air circulates throughout the room.
- Heating - reverse
cycle air conditioners mean cozy warmth in winter at the cheapest
possible rates.
- Set the timer so you never come home to a cold/hot house (with
some units)
Some things to
consider when deciding on air conditioning
- Which rooms do you
want air conditioned?
- Do
you want the whole house cooled or heated?
- Would you like heating
and cooling?
- Is
your home insulated?

Repairs and Service
Just like your car or
home electrical equipment, air conditioners run best when they are
regularly serviced. See Residential
Services for information on how a Maintenance
Program will save you money and your system
and help avoid those times when
Maintenance you
can do yourself is
just simple forthrightly operation. The air filter in any air conditioner
screens out dust and pollen particles, and should be removed and
cleaned. Use a vacuum cleaner or wash in water to clean the air
filters, leave to dry and then place back into unit before use.
This simple cleaning method is covered in the manufacturers instruction
manual.
Cooling Tips
- Install insulation
to help reduce loss of heat and cool
- Keep
windows and doors of your home closed
- Close
drapes during hot summer days and in the winter evenings
- When
those hot days hit, turn your system on early rather than wait
until the building becomes hot as this reduces the load on the
system.
- Keep the fan speed
on the lower setting as this will give adequate performance -
the high speed setting of the circulating fan is only necessary
if you want to speed up the cooling when then unit is first switched
on.
- 22 degrees Celsius
is often quoted as the acceptable temperature for all round comfort.
You can save considerably on the amount of energy consumed for
each degree of cooling/heating that you can do without.
- In summer don't set
your thermostat at a colder or temperature setting than normal
when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home
any faster and could result in excessive cooling and unnecessary
expense.
- Plant
trees or shrubs to shade air-conditioning units but not the block
the airflow. A unit operating in the shade use as much as 10%
less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.
- Set up a regular professional service - Scheduled
Maintenance Program
